Trips and Visits

Each year all pupils have opportunities to go on a number of trips and visits that form part of the curriculum. For example, geography fieldwork features in the scheme of work for various year groups and often pupils can see live productions of plays they are studying in English lessons. The School also organises a programme of outdoor education for all pupils. In addition to curriculum visits and trips there are various optional extra curricular visits organised each year, often during weekends or holidays. Extra curricular trips include ski trips (Year 7 and above), regular visits to Berlin (for Sixth Form), third world countries with World Challenge or Gap Force (for Year 11 and Sixth Form), Iceland (Year 10 and above) and countries of classical historical interest such as Italy and Greece (Year 7 and above).

Foreign Exchanges:  Derby Grammar School has a well established annual exchange programme with schools in France and Germany. The School's experience suggests that pupils who go on an exchange significantly improve their examination grades. The School's policy is that there is a clear expectation that all pupils, studying a foreign language should go on an exchange. Pupils go to stay with their exchange partners for a week in either the autumn or spring terms. Our exchange school in north Germany is in Scharnebeck. Nearby Luneburg is very beautiful and the activities (including the town's spectacular fun pool) and the opportunities in the area for visits all help to ensure that this is a really interesting trip. With the availability of cheap flights from East Midlands or Stansted to Hamburg the cost of the trip is also good value. Our exchange School in France is in the outskirts of Paris. Pupils studying Spanish have the opportunity to stay in a hostel in Barcelona. A programme of morning tuition sessions and afternoon visits ensures that all pupils have a really valuable and enjoyable week.
