Each year all our pupils help raise money for charity and many are directly involved in community service. We feel it is important that young people enjoying a privileged education are mindful of those less fortunate. At the same time charity work helps create a caring attitude and a sense of responsibility for others.
In response to the BBC Children in Need Appeal, pupils in the Sixth Form organise a whole week of fund raising each November. Bouncy boxing competitions, cake sales during morning break, penny trails and non uniform days, have all featured. The highlight is always the end of week evening show, often including an ‘X Factor Finale’ alongside staff being gunged and a host of other acts. Over £20,000 has been raised for the appeal during the last three years.
Other occasions when pupils raise money for charity include the annual Christmas Shoe Box Appeal and the ongoing Junior School Tanzania project.
Meanwhile service in the community is an ingredient of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, involving all pupils at Bronze level and many at Silver and Gold. Gap Force and World Challenge trips to countries such as Ecuador and Ghana have given pupils from Year 11 and above opportunities to take part in exciting overseas charity projects. In addition, other Sixth Form pupils (particular those wanting to study medicine) regularly undertake voluntary work overseas.
